On the evening of February 28th 2015, Mary Pennington was called into the arms of our Lord while in Siloam Springs, OK at the age of 81 years 9 months and 21 days. Mary was born May 17, 1933 to Mitchell and Mary Hoag, on the family farm near Mutual, OK in Woodward county. She was very active in sports while in high school and selected as an honorable mention All-State basketball player. She also played softball and later in life enjoyed tennis, bowling and became a scratch golfer. Mary also played the piano and guitar. One of her best comedic performances was impersonating Elvis singing "Ain't Nothin but a Houndog" while playing the guitar. After graduating Valedictorian from Richmond High School, she attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford and Tulsa Business College in Tulsa, OK.
Mary met the love of her life Don at First Baptist Church, Tulsa, OK. They were married May 7, 1955 and continued to enjoy 59 wonderful years together. After their marriage they moved to Pryor, OK to start their family. While living in Pryor they had two daughters; Barbara born in 1956 and Donna born in 1959. The family moved to Corsicana, TX in 1968 and daughter Becky was born in 1969. In 1979 they moved to Westville, OK to help run the family farm.
Mary had a variety of jobs during her working lifetime. Her first job was as a secretary for American Airlines in Tulsa. In Corsicana she was the secretary at James Bowie Elementary. While living in Westville she was employed at Farmers Insurance Agency and later held jobs at Clarke and Dayspring Cards in Siloam Springs, AR. She had excellent typing, short hand and secretarial skills.
Mary had a passion for sewing and was an excellent seamstress. Every Easter she made hand made dresses for herself and her daughters. Later this manifested into being very good with a variety of arts and crafts projects which she continued to enjoy doing with her granddaughters. Mary's heart was deeply touched by her two precious granddaughters Hannah and Emma. She loved going to their activities, sports and piano recitals and was proud of all their accomplishments.
Don describes Mary as the spiritual warrior of the family. According to Mary, the only way to travel in life is God's way. This was exhibited in the way Mary lived her life in service to her Lord. She was extremely active in the First Baptist Church in each town she lived. She started the library at FBC Pryor, continued her service in Corsicana as the church librarian and working with the children's choir, youth group and again at Westville, helping with Girls in Action, Awana's, Vacation Bible School, Children's Sunday School, playing the piano at the nursing home, singing in the church choir and was an active member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Mary Steinmetz Hoag and Mitchell Hoag, her two brothers; Gilbert and Mitchell Hoag and granddaughter Emily Lynn Kindle.
Mary is survived by her husband Don Pennington, Westville, OK; Daughter, Barbara Pennington, Plano, TX; Daughter, Donna Hoffman and husband Danny, Huntsville, TX; Daughter, Rebecca Kindle and husband Brad, Tulsa, OK; Granddaughters, Hannah and Emma Kindle, Tulsa, OK. Sister, Florence Alkire, Seiling, OK; Sister, Elena Bussell, Tulsa, OK; Sister, Clara Louthan, Coldwater, KS; Brother, Dale Hoag of Silver Cliff, CO; and many other relatives and host of friends.
Funeral services at 10 am on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at First Baptist Church, Westville, OK with Bro. James Duffell and Bro. Justin Heck officiating. Interment at Westville City Cemetery, Westville, OK under the direction of Roberts & Hart Funeral Home.
